Friendship Chemistry

(Mat 4:18-23 NIV)  As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. {19} "Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will make you fishers of men." {20} At once they left their nets and followed him. {21} Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them, {22} and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him. {23} Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people.

Friendship is a very special thing. I don’t believe that we just make friends; I believe that friends make us. They actually find us. Just ask the boys, I mean the disciples. Jesus had begun making a name for Himself, better yet for God and His kingdom. People, I mean hungry people, would follow Him just to be around Him but Jesus was constantly pulling away and hanging with a few good men.

This is one way that we seem to be like Jesus. We have those few select friends that get closer to us than all the others in our lives. I don’t even know how to explain it. We gift both trust and time to them. Here it goes, “They are special”. Oops, in a politically correct world this is unacceptable. We shouldn’t favor one person over another. Really? Jesus certainly loved everyone the same but He absolutely didn’t treat everyone in identical fashion. Let’s look at a couple of examples.

(Mat 23:26-27 NIV) Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean. {27} "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of dead men's bones and everything unclean.

Friends?

Not so much. Okay, maybe but the Pharisees weren’t going to get any “hang time” with Jesus. I know that Jesus loved, and still loves, all people but even Jesus had those few special guys that He seemed to call "BFF's". Now look at what Jesus did with these few other guys, you know the "favorites".

(Mat 17:1-2 NIV)  After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. {2} There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light.

How did the other nine followers feel when Jesus only allowed “the big three” to go to the mountain with Him? It doesn’t seem fair. I mean all the other guys had done the same things that the elite three had done but they don’t get to see “the light show”. What’s up with that?

Have you ever had one of those friendships that happened quickly and lasted a long time? It’s just difficult to explain why we connect with some people and we don’t with others. Jesus seemed to have a special connection with three of His disciples that He didn’t share with the other nine. Is it our faith that connects us? Is it the things that we like and dislike? Is it our political views? Or, is it simple chemistry? For some reason there are just people that we like more than others. You can argue and even fight with these specialpeople and you forgive quickly and move on. It’s strange.

Don’t try and figure it out because I don’t think that we will ever be able to. Today is my parent’s 64th anniversary and their last. My father will pass in the next few weeks. Crazy!!!! I guess that they like each other or their marriage would have certainly ended years ago. I can’t explain it. Like most couples they had their share of disagreements but they just stuck together. I think had they gone to counseling in today’s world most counselors would have encouraged them to divorce. You see they had “major disagreements”.

I’m thankful for counselors but there are just things that psychobabble will never be able to figure out much less explain the chemistry of friendship. Come on, Jesus had a close friend named Peter who cut a guys ear off. Maybe the one who takes the cake, Judas, who would betray Him but he was still in Jesus inner circle. Why didn’t those around Jesus warn him that Judas was bad news? Or, that Peter had a violent temper? Chemistry? Cause?

Friends can say things to us that no one else can. I mean Jesus even called Peter “Satan”.  In Proverbs 27:6 it says that wounds from a friend can be trusted, but an enemy multiplies kisses. I’m not sure that anyone in Jesus day could figure out why he picked the “dirty dozen”. These guys couldn’t possibly have been qualified to perform the tasks that Jesus would ask of them…but they did. Go figure. I guess the old saying; “Don’t judge a book by its cover” might apply here. Friendship is just difficult to explain but we all need friends. There were people that seemed to click with Jesus more than others.

(John 11:4-5 NIV) When he heard this, Jesus said, "This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for God's glory so that God's Son may be glorified through it." {5} Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.

(John 13:21-23 NIV) After he had said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit and testified, "I tell you the truth, one of you is going to betray me." {22} His disciples stared at one another, at a loss to know which of them he meant. {23} One of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved, was reclining next to him.

Jesus had a way of just showing up but He mostly did so around His chosen followers. Yes, He loves everyone but He didn’t spend quality time with everyone. He clicked with a certain group. We can’t have a close bond with everyone we meet. I believe that really great relationships are organic. One of the most popular sitcoms ever was called “Friends”. I guess that should help us understand that we ALL want and need friends. Just remember, it’s okay to have “special” people/friends in your life. Jesus did.

                Friends Theme Song

So no one told you life was going to be this way.

Your job's a joke, you're broke, you're love life's DOA.

It's like you're always stuck in second gear,

Well, it hasn't been your day, your week, your month, or even your year.

But, I'll be there for you, when the rain starts to pour.

I'll be there for you, like I've been there before.

I'll be there for you, cause you're there for me too.

You're still in bed at ten, the work began at eight.

You've burned your breakfast, so far, things are going great.

Your mother warned you there'd be days like these,

But she didn't tell you when the world has brought you down to your knees.

That, I'll be there for you, when the rain starts to pour.

I'll be there for you, like I've been there before.

I'll be there for you, cause you're there for me too.

No one could ever know me, no one could ever see me.

Seems like you're the only one who knows what it's like to be me.

Someone to face the day with, make it through all the rest with,

Someone I'll always laugh with, even at my worst, I'm best with you.

It's like you're always stuck in second gear,

Well, it hasn't been your day, your week, your month, or even your year.

But, I'll be there for you, when the rain starts to pour.

I'll be there for you, like I've been there before.

I'll be there for you, cause you're there for me too.

Be a friend today!
